AED Initiative

The Eastern Ohio AED Initiative is a non-profit program in partnership with the Muskingum Lakes Chapter of the American Red Cross.  Its purpose is to purchase and distribute Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) within Carroll, Harrison, and Tuscarawas counties of Ohio. The goal of the Initiative is to distribute 500 AEDs within Carroll, Harrison, and Tuscarawas counties by the year 2014.
Targeted distribution groups include:

  • law enforcement vehicles

  • volunteer fire departments

  • volunteer EMS squads

  • non-profit community groups (e.g. libraries, seniorcenters, churches)

Private businesses and for-profit entities can take advantage of the Initiative’s discounted AED pricing and obtain CPR/AED training through the American Red Cross.

Within the tri-county area there are an estimated 236 sudden cardiac arrests annually. The national survival rate is 5 percent. AEDs are strategically placed in non-profit buildings and public facilities, such as churches, senior centers and libraries, and in law enforcement and rescue vehicles. The initiative’s goal is to increase the survival rate to 25 percent, or save the lives of 47 more people. Nearly 200 units have been awarded so far and more than 500 people have been trained in CPR and AED usage.
